Race Host Notes

We of the Pagosa Springs 160 SARL Air Race believe that we have developed a great race program for SARL competitors in beautiful South West Colorado.

Note: Race aircraft will be parked in the North Ramp adjacent to the FBO

Fuel will be available to competitors from both the Full Service Truck and the Self Service facility on the North Ramp. Competitors will receive a discount from the regular Self Service price at the Self Service pump. Be sure to fill up your tanks as a Thank You to Chris Harker of AvJet for his consideration of the SARL Racers.

Terrain becomes a significant issue when planning a course in the mountains. The course has been planned to maximize safety, with most of the course over roads, upon which a safe landing may be achieved, and to avoid crossing high terrain. Usable airports have been chosen as turn points where available. We have also tried to take advantage of the beautiful Colorado scenery by flying past or over neat things to see, such as Navajo Lake, Chimney Rock Indian lunar observatory (now a National Monument), areas rich in elk and deer and the Southern Ute Tribal gas and oil production areas.

The finish point will again be on the east shore of Capote Lake. An orange tarp on the eastern shore of Capote Lake marks the finish point. Be sure to fly to the right of the tarp to prevent being too close to the timing and scoring crew. Recovery to the Pagosa Springs Airport will be via standard Pilot Controlled Airport Procedures.

The PSO 160 is a Non-Waivered Event. This means that all applicable FARs must be observed. The waypoint elevations and altitudes shown in the briefing are for your convenience in complying with the applicable FARs. The finish point is in a “sparsely populated area” so the finish line can be crossed at any altitude you wish. The Southern Ute Tribe has kindly agreed to move all picnickers and boats to the west shore line of Capote Lake during the time of the air race to insure the minimum of 500’ from people, boats or buildings.

Please plan to attend the Friday evening welcome dinner at Jim and Sheila Lane’s Hangar (Bravo taxiway – transportation will be provided).

If you have the time, plan to stay for another day or two in Pagosa Springs. There are many interesting things to do and experience in Pagosa, including the Hot Springs, the Spa, beautiful hiking, bicycling, picnic lunches at Williams Reservoir (alpine lake), Chimney Rock Archeological site, balloon rides and great early morning flightseeing in the beautiful areas surrounding Pagosa Springs. Plus lots more! Hang around!

The Alpine Inn will be the Official Motel for the Air Race. With all of the activities in Pagosa Springs that weekend, it would be wise to book ASAP.
Contact: 970-731-4005. The rate of $69.00 for a room with two Queen Size beds will be honored. Register early to ensure the discount.
Do not reserve a room through Expedia or any other intermediary. You must call or e-mail The Alpine Inn directly in order to get the discounted room. The intermediaries charge the hotel $10-$20 per night for their service, eliminating the discount on the room!

We will be providing transportation to the motels, to the Friday evening dinner and back to the airport on Saturday morning.
As further information becomes available, I will update these notes on the SARL website (www.sportairrace.org).

Thank you all in advance for racing in the Pagosa Springs 160 air race. We hope that you will enjoy participating in the race as much as we have in planning it.
